3The U.S. Civil War, or the War Between the States, was the bloodiest conflict on American soil, pitting citizens against one another in a struggle over ideas relating to slavery, states’ rights, finance, culture, and moral beliefs. It ultimately resulted in staggering numbers of deaths on the battlefields and at home due to conflict, starvation, disease, and privation. America was changed from its core and would never be the same.
