Parish registers recorded baptisms, marriages, and burials over a period of almost 300 years, from 1538 until Civil Registration began in 1837. Parish registers have also continued to be maintained after 1837 as well. That means that you have multiple places to search for your ancestors, including:
- Parish registers
- Bishops’ Transcripts
- Civil Registration (from 1837)
We will discuss Civil Registration in significant detail in the video titled “Locating & Ordering English & Welsh BMDs” (Births, Marriages, and Deaths).
